CHICAGO—Politicians are hearing the anti-tax roar growing in Illinois. A record 62 candidates have been endorsed for the February 2, 2010 primary election by Tax Accountability, the political action arm of National Taxpayers United of Illinois (NTUI). The full list of candidates endorsed is available on www.NTUI.org.
Jim Tobin, president of Tax Accountability, explained, “This past spring, 30 Chicago suburban mayors were thrown out of office, mainly for not providing tax relief to voters. This put incumbents at all levels on notice that they had better start protecting taxpayers if they want to keep their jobs. In addition, the Tea Party movement has drawn new activists to run for office as tax fighters.”
Tax Accountability sent candidate questionnaires and Taxpayer Protection Pledges to all 549 candidates for US Senator and Representative, Governor and Lt. Governor, State Senator and Representative, as well as County Board members for Cook, DuPage, and Grundy counties. The questionnaires covered a range of tax issues targeted to each level of government. From the respondents, about half were selected for endorsement—all of whom pledged to “oppose any and all efforts to increase taxes.”
Tobin continued, “We have endorsed candidates for all three established political parties in Illinois: Democrats, Greens, and Republicans. I ask every voter to check our list so they can vote in February for the candidates who will protect them from Illinois’ tax-and-spend villains, like Gubernatorial Candidates Pat Quinn and Jim Ryan.”
